In many organizations today, success is measured by numbers—how many members, how many events, how many new faces through the door. In Freemasonry, growth is important, but at St. George’s Lodge no. 15 in St. Catharines, Ontario we have learned a deeper truth:
Quality, character, and culture will always outweigh quantity.
We are not the largest lodge in the district, nor do we rely on our age (est. 1814). Yet St. George’s continues to flourish year after year. Visiting Brethren know us well, not because of how many we are, but because of who we are. Our reputation has been built on three strong pillars: genuine fellowship, an outstanding social calendar, and a commitment to excellence in our Masonic work.
Ask almost any Mason in the region about St. George’s, and you will hear the same response: “That’s the welcoming and fun lodge.”
From the moment a visiting Brother walks through our doors, he is greeted with a handshake, a smile, and a sincere welcome. New members quickly discover that they are not simply joining another organization—they are becoming part of a true brotherhood. Camaraderie is not something we talk about; it is something we live.
Our success does not depend on aggressive recruitment campaigns or glossy advertisements. Instead, it grows naturally through word of mouth. Excellence in the Lodge Room
Friendship and fellowship are vital, but so too is the quality of our Masonic experience. At St. George’s, we take great pride in our ritual work and in the manner in which we conduct our degrees.
Attention to detail is one of our trademarks. Candidates who pass through our lodge receive degrees that are well-prepared, dignified, and meaningful. Officers rehearse, mentors guide, and the entire lodge works together to ensure that every ceremony is delivered with care and professionalism.
Yet we achieve this without ever losing our sense of enjoyment.
We firmly believe that Masonic excellence and a fun atmosphere are not opposites—they go hand in hand. Our meetings are respectful and well-organized, but they are also relaxed, welcoming, and filled with good humour. The result is a lodge room where tradition is honoured, learning is encouraged, and Brothers genuinely look forward to attending.
A Social Calendar That Builds Brotherhood
Masonry has always been about more than ritual. The lessons of the Craft truly come alive when Brothers gather together outside the lodge room as friends.
That is why St. George’s places such importance on an active and engaging social calendar. Throughout the year we host dinners, family events, charitable activities, and informal gatherings that keep our members connected. These occasions strengthen relationships, include our families, and remind us that being a Mason is meant to be enjoyable.

It would be easy to worry about headcounts or compare ourselves to larger lodges. But we have learned that a lodge does not need to be big to be great.
What matters is the experience we offer to every Brother who joins us. A lodge filled with enthusiasm, kindness, good ritual, and strong fellowship will always be stronger than one focused solely on statistics.
At St. George’s, we measure success differently. We measure it in friendships formed, in candidates inspired, in visitors who return again and again, and in members who are proud to say, “This is my lodge.”
